When Things Go Very Wrong

In the midst of attempting to convert PowerPoint lectures into a format that I could post on Moodle, I have encountered two significant problems. One, files larger than 10mb are too large to convert. Two, certain lectures convert into all black screen and in some instances I am unable to edit these lectures so they can be read.

Some Solutions:
Now PowerPoint has an option that allows for reducing the file size of some files that can be found under the File operations heading or found using the application's help option.

Likewise, Google Docs allows for some editing of converted PowerPoint files.

  1. This is so helpful that you have experimented, found out what can go wrong, and shared your findings with us! This is exactly what I mean by "seek ways for things to go wrong with technology, learn from this, and celebrate the mistakes!"

By the way, reducing the file size option is only for WIndows, not Macs. The Mac version does provide the option to compress the file size (see: http://facultysupport.ucdavis.edu/techtips/powerpoint/compressing%20images%20in%20mac/index.html) but it doesn't work! I tried this at multiple settings (from the lowest to the highest file size compression) and all the resulting files were the same size as the original. Score 1 for Windows, 0 for Mac on this one!! :( [Mac users, do you have any insights here, other than to reduce image size before inserting each image -- which is a real pain?]

  2. Dear Helen,

That is good to know. My guess is the only solution would be to separate larger powerpoints into two smaller parts and post the parts individually.
